Topanga is the name given to the area by the Tongva tribe, and may mean "a place above." It was the western border of their territory, abutting the Chumash tribe that occupied the coast from Malibu northwards. Bedrock mortars can be found carved into rock outcroppings in many locations. In the 1920's, Topanga Canyon became a weekend getaway for Hollywood stars with several cottages built for that purpose. Its good to know that I'm not the only one that scours e-bay for interesting San Fernando valley & Canoga Park labeled items. Great finds.
One of my favorite drives was going north through Topanga Canyon, starting at the PCH. First you hit the deep crevassed hills, then run through the town (I TRIED not to go too fast!). Then, it was over the dry slopes, around the curves and into the Valley. It's one of my fave memories of driving in L.A. Well, that and Mulholland Dr. late on a May afternoon when the marine layer floats in and skirts the roadway.
