Another good idea

A "spin" on the water transportation idea:

In developing countries the simple act of doing the laundry is a lot of effort. The major problems are bad ergonomics (in washing and transporting), distant water supply areas and the burden to carry the heavy laundry to and from the water source . . . more

Small steps, big leaps

Solar power isn't the solution for everything, but it can offer big savings for what may seem like minor needs . . . solar-powered trash cans that could save $13 million over 10 years. Even if you subtract maintenance fees, that has to be worth the initial cost.

Here in the San Fernando Valley, we get more than our share of sun and I would install solar roof panels if I could afford it - or, even paint our roof white if I didn't think we would blind our neighbors.

Pick & Choose News

If you'd rather read local papers such as the Fresno Bee than CNN.com, you can go to the Bee's web site or you can visit the Newseum's local paper directory. It offers a more convenient way to access local papers from one location - either by location or alphabetical. Click on the paper's front page and to read further, click on the paper's web site link. So, what's happening in Biloxi today?

The best time to buy

Not to encourage you to spend, but if you must, some advice:

Airplane Tickets

When to buy: On a Wednesday, 21 days (or a couple of days earlier) before your flight.
Why: Airlines make major pricing changes (and run fare sales) every week, typically on Tuesday evenings and Wednesday mornings. About 21 days out from your flight, you'll see plenty of deals out there as airlines scramble to fill seats, says Anne Banas, executive editor of SmarterTravel.com, a consumer travel advice Web site. Don't wait much longer, she cautions; prices jump significantly from 14 to seven days ahead of departure.

Real-time weather

Useful temperature map using Google Maps. Search by city name and state or zip code to find the current temperatures in your area. This picture shows the temperatures around me right now. The -4 degree reading south of Palos Verdes seems a bit off, though.
